Extra care and independent living schemes

Extra Care Housing is housing generally intended for individuals aged 55 and over and who may need some additional support to enable them to live independently, in their own home.

The main feature of Extra Care Housing is the presence of an on-site care team who provide 24/7 background support to residents. The on-site care team may also provide a personal care package to individual residents who may need it.  This is an arrangement between the resident and the regulated care provider and is additional to rent and service charges.

Another key feature of Extra Care Housing is the provision of additional services for residents to access, for example, a coffee shop and restaurant, hairdressers, gym, bar and a craft room.

Residents who live in Extra Care Housing are generally active and able to take part in the many activities that take place within the scheme.  Residents have their own apartment with their own front door and are free to be involved in as much or as little as they wish. The additional care and support provided within Extra Care Schemes helps residents live in their own homes for longer, and reduces the need to move into Residential Care.

Independent living (sheltered) is housing specifically designated for over 55's.  The properties benefit from having a 24/7 emergency alarm system, giving residents peace of mind and reassurance that they can reach help and support, should they need it.

Residents have their own apartment/bungalow, but some independent living (sheltered) schemes also benefit from featuring a communal lounge where residents can come together and take part in activities, for example, coffee mornings.

Residents living in independent living (sheltered) housing also benefit from receiving a Scheme Manager service, where welfare calls are provided to ensure residents are safe and well.  Scheme Managers work closely with the Housing Team and local agencies and can signpost residents to additional support services, should they need it.

JRHT have a small number of specialist Supported Living accommodation for residents who have learning disabilities.

This accommodation is owned by JRHT but generally has a managing agent who provides and manages the support provided to the residents living within the accommodation.

Allocations to Supported Living is via referrals to the specialist support provider.
