As part of Supported Housing Week, led by the National Housing Federation (NHF), we're celebrating the people, places and services that help residents live independently, confidently and well.
The week shines a spotlight on the vital role supported housing plays in helping people maintain their independence, stay connected to their communities and live fulfilling lives.
Supported housing provides more than a place to live. It helps people maintain their independence, stay connected to their communities and access support when they need it. Through our Supported Living services, we work with older people to help them live fulfilling lives in safe and welcoming communities.
Across our Independent Living and Extra Care services, residents benefit from a combination of high-quality homes, practical support and opportunities to build friendships and stay active.
Support that changes lives
The impact of supported housing is best reflected in the experiences of the people who live in our communities. The comments shared by residents reflect experiences we hear across our communities.
Some of the comments included:
"This place is wonderful."
"It feels like you are truly independent."
"Best decision I've ever made."
"This is my forever home."
Behind each quote is a personal story of resilience, connection and support. The experiences of Viv and Ray show how supported housing can help people overcome challenges, build confidence and remain independent.
Their experiences demonstrate how supported housing can provide not only a home, but also security, confidence and a sense of belonging.
Viv’s story: From Isolation to Involvement
When Viv moved into her supported living community during the Covid-19 pandemic, opportunities to meet people and get involved were limited. Living alone and unsure about joining in, she spent much of her time in her apartment and became increasingly isolated.
Through regular welfare calls, encouragement from colleagues and opportunities to participate in activities as restrictions eased, Viv gradually rebuilt her confidence and developed strong connections within her community.
Today, she plays an active role in resident groups, helping to organise activities and influence decisions that affect residents' lives.
Her story demonstrates that the impact of supported housing extends far beyond practical support. By creating opportunities for people to connect, participate and have their voices heard, supported housing can help reduce isolation, strengthen wellbeing and foster a genuine sense of belonging.
Ray’s story: Rebuilding confidence after loss
After the death of his wife, Ray found himself facing a period of loss and uncertainty. Supported by colleagues and surrounded by a welcoming community, he was able to make new connections, take part in social activities and regain his confidence.
Today, his experience serves as a powerful example of the difference supported housing can make, helping people not only to live independently, but also to remain connected, supported and active within their community.
Ray and Viv's experiences demonstrate the difference supported housing can make in helping people maintain their independence, wellbeing and connections within their community.
Reflecting on the importance of these services, Terrie Alafat CBE, Chair of the JRHT Board, said: “Everyone should have a home that supports their health, wellbeing and independence. Supported housing provides that foundation and can truly change lives. The work being led by the National Housing Federation to share evidence and real-life stories is so important in helping people understand the impact of these services, and I’m pleased to support it.”
Creating communities where people can thrive
Supported housing is about more than bricks and mortar. It's about creating communities where people feel valued, connected and supported to live the lives they choose.
As we mark Supported Housing Week, we're proud of the difference our Supported Living services make every day. By providing the right homes, support and opportunities, we help residents maintain their independence, build meaningful connections and continue living well for longer.
