Barbara's Story: More than a home

Barbara’s story shows how Extra Care housing at Plaxton Court enables her to live independently, stay active and maintain meaningful connections by providing a safe, welcoming home, reassurance through access to support and opportunities to be part of a thriving community.

Celebrating community at Plaxton Court

When Barbara celebrated her 100th birthday at Plaxton Court, she was surrounded by family, friends, fellow residents and colleagues. The occasion brought together people from across the community to mark an extraordinary milestone and highlighted the important role supported housing can play in helping people stay connected, independent and active in later life.

The celebration included entertainment from a local ukulele band The Hunmanbees, refreshments prepared by the catering team and a visit from Mrs Venetia Wrigley, Deputy Lord Lieutenant for North Yorkshire, who presented Barbara with a birthday card on behalf of King Charles and Queen Camilla.

While the birthday itself was a remarkable achievement, the celebration also highlighted something just as important the strength of the community that Barbara is part of.

Independence with reassurance

Plaxton Court is an Extra Care housing scheme where residents enjoy the independence of living in their own homes while having access to support and care when needed. The scheme also offers communal facilities and opportunities for residents to take part in activities and build relationships with others.

Amanda Sedgwick, General Manager at Plaxton Court said "Barbara's birthday celebration is a wonderful example of the opportunities that life in an Extra Care community can provide. Extra Care offers residents the independence of having their own home, combined with the reassurance of support when it is needed. It provides a safe, positive and welcoming environment where people can remain independent, build friendships, take part in activities and feel part of a community."

Creating communities where people thrive

Supported Housing Week (19 – 23 October) is an opportunity to celebrate not only the homes and services that support residents, but also the communities that help people live well.

Barbara's celebration showed how supported housing can provide more than accommodation. It can create opportunities for friendship, shared experiences and meaningful connections, helping residents remain active and involved in community life.

From everyday conversations and organised activities to major events and celebrations, supported housing helps people maintain their independence while enjoying the benefits of being part of a supportive community.

The difference supported housing makes

Barbara's 100th birthday was a moment of celebration for everyone at Plaxton Court, but it also served as a powerful reminder of what supported housing can achieve: providing a safe, welcoming environment where residents feel valued, connected and supported to live the lives they choose.

As we celebrate Supported Housing Week, stories like Barbara's demonstrate how the right home, the right support and a strong community can help people continue to live independently and well for longer.
