Supported Housing Week is a chance to celebrate the difference supported housing makes to people's lives. Across our supported living communities, residents have access to safe, affordable homes alongside tailored support that helps them maintain their independence, health and wellbeing. This story highlights how the right home and support can help people live well and thrive.
When Viv moved into Hartfields in 2021, the country was still facing the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Like many people during this period, she experienced loneliness, anxiety and isolation. Restrictions made it difficult for her to meet new people and settle into her new home.
Viv often found herself staying in her apartment and was reluctant to engage with others. Recognising that she was struggling, colleagues began making regular welfare calls.
These conversations provided reassurance, emotional support and an opportunity for Viv to speak openly about how she was feeling. The calls became an important lifeline for her.
Through ongoing contact, colleagues were able to identify the impact of isolation was having on her mental health and encouraged her to access additional support through her GP and healthcare services.
When Viv later contracted Covid-19, daily welfare calls helped ensure she remained connected and supported throughout her recovery.
As restrictions eased, colleagues gently encouraged her to take small steps towards being involved in community life again. Her first coffee morning felt like a significant challenge, but the experience was transformative.
She met other residents, reconnected with some familiar faces, and began to rebuild her confidence.
Her journey is a remarkable example of personal growth and resilience. She regularly attends coffee mornings, Nostalgia sessions and community events.
She has been a valued member of the Residents' Committee for two consecutive years, and now also contributes as a member of the Hartfields Management Committee.
The journey Viv has made from feeling unable to leave her apartment to becoming a community leader reflects the confidence and resilience she was developed with the invaluable support of those around her.
As Supported Housing Week celebrates the value of supported housing, Viv's story shows how the right support, encouragement and sense of community can help people overcome isolation, rebuild confidence and play an active role in the communities they all call home.
