Supported Housing Week is a chance to celebrate the difference supported housing makes to people's lives. Across our supported living communities, residents have access to safe, affordable homes alongside tailored support that helps them maintain their independence, health and wellbeing. This story highlights how the right home and support can help people live well and thrive.
When Ray and his wife moved to Hartfields from Liverpool, they were looking for a place which would offer both independence and peace of mind. Returning closer to family and familiar surroundings, they chose Hartfields because of the level of support available should they need it, particularly as Ray’s wife was living with long-term health conditions.
Sadly, only a short time after moving in Ray’s wife sadly passed away. The loss was devastating, but Ray and his family did not face it alone.
During this difficult period, colleagues at Hartfields provided practical support, reassurance and a listening ear, helping Ray and his loved ones navigate the challenge of bereavement. Regular wellbeing checks and ongoing encouragement helped Ray feel supported while respecting his independence.
Despite his tragic loss, Ray was determined to remain active and continued to enjoy life. With the support of those around him, he gradually rebuilt his confidence and established a strong network of friendships within the Hartfields community.
He has formed meaningful relationships with both residents and colleagues. His family regularly speak about the difference living at Hartfields has made, highlighting the positive impact the community has had on his wellbeing and quality of life.
Alongside emotional support, practical assistance has also played an important role.
Colleagues have helped Ray understand his council tax and benefits entitlements, reducing financial pressures and providing reassurance during an already challenging time.
Ray makes the most of the opportunities available at Hartfields, regularly taking part in activities such as Sunday evening quizzes and Nostalgia sessions.
He has also been a member of the Residents' Committee, helping to represent the views and experiences of fellow residents.
Whether catching up with friends in the restaurant, enjoying a coffee in the Costa café or spending time with family, Ray has found the right balance between independent living and community connection.
Reflecting the impact that supported housing can have, Ray's experience shows how the right environment, practical support and sense of belonging can help people navigate life's most difficult moments.
Today, he continues to live independently, confidently and with a renewed sense of purpose, surrounded by a community that cares and supports him.
As Supported Housing Week celebrates the difference supported housing makes across the country, Ray's story demonstrates how the right home, practical support and a strong community can help people maintain their independence, rebuild confidence after life's challenges and continue living fulfilling lives.
