About us

The Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust (JRHT) is a registered housing association and care provider in York and north-east England. It is working with the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) to inspire social change.

We were established more than 100 years ago by Joseph Rowntree to provide housing in communities. We work with JRF to understand the root causes of social problems. Our shared vision is of a prosperous, poverty-free UK. We work with our residents to help them make ends meet.

Our homes and communities

We manage around 2,500 homes, half of which are located in the village of New Earswick, York. The rest are spread across North East England, including York, Scarborough, Beverley, Leeds and Hartlepool.

We cater for a variety of needs. We have flats, houses and bungalows suitable for single people, couples, families with children and older people. This includes sheltered and retirement living schemes with extra care services. We act as landlord to residents renting our properties. We also invest in and support communities to enhance the lives of those living in them. For those who cannot afford to buy a home outright we offer shared ownership or affordable full ownership.

Our developments

Our Development and Asset Management Team are responsible for designing and building new developments within communities across Yorkshire and the North-East.

Notable recent developments include:

  • The new community of Derwenthorpe which was created to provide much needed new housing in the city. It has attractive, affordable, eco-friendly family homes in a digitally inclusive, mixed-tenure community;
  • New Lodge in New Earswick - work started in 2017 and residents moved into Rowntree Lodge and Parker Court 45 care suites and 57 extra care apartments in 2019. The final phase Seebohm House and Unwin Court a further 48 extra care apartments completed in November 2021. Improved public space in New Earswick has been created.

The next steps on our journey for development is to build 1,000 new homes over the next ten years. Our approach is clearly set out in our development strategy which has recently been approved by JRHT board and directors.
