Domestic abuse
Domestic abuse is any behaviour used by one person to harm, control, intimidate or coerce another person. It can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexuality or religion.
Domestic abuse is never acceptable, and support is available if you are experiencing it or are worried about someone else. We will treat any information you share sensitively and confidentially wherever possible.
Abuse can take many forms, including:
- Emotional or psychological abuse
- Physical or sexual abuse
- Financial or economic control
- Stalking or harassment
- Online or digital abuse
- So-called honour-based abuse or forced marriage
Some signs of domestic abuse may include:
- Threats, intimidation or controlling behaviour
- Restricting access to money or finances
- Being isolated from family, friends or support networks
- Physical or sexual violence
- Monitoring your movements, phone or online activity
- Constant jealousy or unfounded accusations
Domestic abuse can have a significant impact on a person's health, wellbeing and relationships. Children who see, hear or experience domestic abuse are also affected and are recognised as victims in their own right.
