Getting online: support accessing digital equipment

Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust (JRHT) can support you to access digital devices such as laptops, smartphones or tablets.

IT ReUse (York Only)

JRHT are now able to support York residents to get access to free digital devices to get online and make the most of online services.

We have teamed up with IT ReUse to offer free digital devices. This means that if you live in a home managed by JRHT in York and meet certain criteria, you can apply for devices like a laptop at no cost. If you are currently unable to afford a digital device or unable to acquire one due to another reason, then IT ReUse can support you. Even if you already have a smartphone, you might still qualify for a laptop, especially if you are job hunting or eager to learn new things.

How do you get a free digital device?

  • You need to apply through JRHT or with the help of a social or support worker. You cannot apply directly to IT ReUse.
  • IT ReUse make the final decision. After you complete the application, it goes to IT ReUse for them to review and decide if you qualify.
  • The distribution of digital devices depends on individual circumstances. Each applicants’ individual circumstances are taken into consideration, as determined through the application process.
  • Availability is limited. There may be delays of a few weeks in receiving the device. This is all dependent on the donations received by IT ReUse.

Further guidance can be found on the IT ReUse website.

What is IT ReUse?

The IT ReUse project is based in York and is supported by donations of IT equipment from the public and local businesses. These devices are then refurbished and repaired. Then, through a network of community workers and organisations they distribute them to individuals who cannot access essential services. IT ReUse also provide helpful how-to guides, with each device depending on your needs, and are also conscious of any specific accessibility needs.

Reboot North Yorkshire

If you live in North Yorkshire, you can apply for Reboot. This is a scheme provided by North Yorkshire Council to distribute second hand and refurbished digital devices to:

  • children, to enable them to access online school lessons or homework
  • families, who have no or limited access to the internet
  • vulnerable people, who may be socially isolated
  • older people, to enable them to stay in touch with services, friends and family.

Apply by contacting our Digital Inclusion Officer and if successful you can collect your device from your nearest North Yorkshire Library
