Smart technology helps spot boiler problems early

When we installed new boilers in the homes at Plaxton Court, we also trialled something new: remote diagnostic devices that monitor how each boiler is performing.

Last week, that trial made a real difference for one resident. Overnight, we received an alert flagging a problem with a boiler in one of the homes.

We called the resident first thing the next morning before they had reported the problem themselves. We arranged for an engineer to visit that morning, and the issue was diagnosed and fixed by lunchtime.

The resident told us:

"Just after eight o'clock this morning I received a call from JRHT to say that they had spotted a problem with my gas boiler and were sending an engineer to investigate. Nick arrived at about 12.30, diagnosed the problem and fixed it. It doesn't get much better than that!"

How the technology works

The remote diagnostic devices were trialled by the Building Services team as part of the wider boiler installation at Plaxton Court.

If a boiler shows signs of a problem, the system sends out an alert to us. It also provides information that can help our engineers diagnose the issue and identify any parts they may need.

This means we can respond quickly and gives us a better chance of fixing the problem on the first visit.

The trial is helping us understand how this technology could support a more proactive approach to boiler maintenance, identifying potential problems earlier and helping to reduce disruption for residents.
