We are pleased to inform you that we have signed the LGBTQ+ Housing Pledge – a national promise to help make housing better and more inclusive for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer+ people.
This builds on the work we are already doing to support LGBTQ+ inclusion across JRHT, through our LGBTQ+ Network and our support for York Pride.
What is the Housing Pledge?
The Pledge was created by a group called HouseProud after they carried out research with the University of Surrey. The study looked at what life is like for LGBTQ+ people living in social housing.
It found that many LGBTQ+ residents felt left out, treated differently, or not safe in their homes. The Pledge is a way for housing organisations like JRHT to say - we are listening, and we want to do better.
By signing the Pledge, we are agreeing to do three main things:
- Make sure LGBTQ+ residents have a say in how things are run
- Make LGBTQ+ people more visible and supported in our communities
- Give colleagues training to understand and support LGBTQ+ residents
What JRHT is already doing
We have already started work in these areas. Our LGBTQ+ Network is open to residents and colleagues, giving people a space to connect, share ideas, and raise issues that matter to them.
We are also proud to be long-time supporters of York Pride, and we are committed to continuing this work all year round not just in June.
“This Pledge is part of our ongoing commitment to make sure everyone feels safe, respected and included in their home and community”. Chris Simpson, Managing Director and LGBT+ Network Sponsor
