The Oaks sits within the Hartrigg Oaks retirement village, creating a community of around 250 people. We’re located in New Earswick, an Edwardian garden village within easy reach of York’s historic city centre.
The Oaks has 43 en-suite private rooms for people aged 60 and over.
We want our residents to feel at home, so we encourage them to furnish their room individually, creating a space that’s comfortable and personal to them.
Our rooms and facilities are all wheelchair accessible and can easily be adapted with accessibility aids for ease of living.

The Oaks has its own private facilities including a lounge, activity area, dining room and rose garden.
Our residents can also enjoy the communal facilities within Hartrigg Oaks, including:
- a coffee shop and restaurant
- a small convenience shop
- a library
- IT equipment and support
- an arts and crafts room
- a gym, complete with spa pool
- a hair salon
- a room for guests
We also have a people carrier-style minibus, which we use for social outings. (note: check with Registered manager about this)
We run regular activities to help our residents stay healthy, active and social.
Care and support at The Oaks
At The Oaks We specialise in person-centred care. This means we treat each resident as an individual and as an expert their own needs. We take time to find out what’s important to them so we can build authentic relationships and provide them with services that meet their needs.
Our dedicated team of qualified nurses and carers respond to each resident’s social and emotional wellbeing and their personal wishes when planning their care.
We also provide access to health professionals based in Hartrigg Oaks Continuing Care Retirement Community, including:
- specialist nurses to support extra care needs
- physiotherapists offering injury rehabilitation and exercise support
- counsellors providing emotional support and guidance
The Oaks is registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) to provide personal care. This means it’s subject to regulatory inspections. See our most recent inspection reports.
Food and mealtimes at The Oaks
We understand the importance of a varied diet, so we support all of our residents with diet and nutrition advice. Our chefs prepare fresh meals that are as healthy as they are tasty, with plenty of options available for those with special diets and nutritional needs.
Mealtimes at The Oaks are more than just food, they’re often a social activity. We bring food-based fun into the dining room with a calendar of themed events. You might find us celebrating a national event, or featuring our residents’ favourite childhood dishes on the menu. There are always new flavours to try and new experiences to share.
Visitors and guests
We are fully open to visitors and there are no restrictions on time, we do ask that visitors wear a mask in communal areas. If a resident has Covid or we are in outbreak then it is the nominated visitor that can only visit.
