We have secured funding to launch a new Digital Champions programme, building on our ongoing work to improve digital inclusion for residents.

Funded by the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority (YNYCA), through the UK government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund, this initiative will help more people gain the skills and confidence to get online, access essential services, and stay connected in an increasingly digital world.

Since 2023, our digital inclusion work has already supported over 500 residents in getting online, building confidence, and feeling more connected with others.

A community-led approach to Digital Inclusion

The new programme will give residents the chance to become Digital Champions (DCs) – offering friendly and practical support to communities within York and North Yorkshire.

Connor Lambert, JRHT Digital Inclusion Officer  said "It is really exciting to be working alongside residents to create a network of support that’s not only comprehensive but right on their doorsteps, By working directly with residents and the Digital Champions, we can provide the right kind of support for each community – not a 'one size fits all' approach."

David Skaith, Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, said: “The online world is part of everyday life – it helps us stay in touch with family and friends, use health services, and opens up so many opportunities. But it only really works if people feel safe and confident online."

“That’s why I’m backing the brilliant work of organisations like JRHT here in York and North Yorkshire.

“Through my Digital Inclusion Programme, I am proud to be helping more people get connected – not just to the internet, but to their communities too.”

Digital Champions will work with Connor, to run sessions and provide one to one guidance. This includes:

  • 1:1 Support: Helping with everyday tasks like sending emails, using the NHS app, and navigating social media.

  • Safety and Accessibility: Giving advice on online safety and tailoring devices to meet individual needs.

  • Community Events: Supporting drop-in sessions and organising group sessions, often in partnership with local organisations like York Learning, North Yorkshire Police, and AbilityNet.

  • Raising Awareness: Signposting residents to our wider digital support services, including free SIM cards, digital devices, home Wi-Fi devices, and help applying for social tariffs for broadband.

Impact and Future Vision

Our digital inclusion work is already making a big difference.  Residents have told us that the support has helped them:

  • 83% feel more connected to others
  • 69% feel more control over their lives
  • 67% feel less socially isolated.
  • 83% feel more confident using digital devices and services.

The new programme will build on this success, reaching even more people and helping to ensure no one is left behind. It will also connect residents to other vital JRHT services, such as our Money and Benefits Advice Service and with partners like IT ReUse, who provide access to free and affordable digital devices.
