Christmas is a time to enjoy cosy lights, decorations and time with loved ones. But it’s also a time when fire risks can increase. A few simple checks can help keep your home safe throughout the festive season:
Christmas Lights
- Check before you decorate: look for frayed wires, damaged plugs or broken bulbs. Replace anything which looks worn immediately.
- Use safe sockets: Don’t overload sockets and always use an RCD (Residual Current Device) where you can.
- Switch off at night: Turn off all lights before you go to bed or leave the house.
- Real Tree? Keep it watered: Dry trees can catch fire easily
Candles
- Place safely: Keep candles away from curtains, decorations, and anything else which might catch fire.
- Never leave unattended: Always blow out candles before you leave the room or go to sleep.
- Try LED candles: They look great and are much safer.
Decorations
- Mind inflammable items: Paper decorations, tinsel, and artificial greenery can ignite quickly.
- Keep them away from heaters, lights and open fires.
Cooking Safety
- Stay with your cooking: Don’t leave pans unattended, especially when frying.
- Create a safe space: Keep children and pets away from the oven and hob.
- Avoid distractions: Festive gatherings can get busy -stay focused when using the hob or oven.
General Tips
- Test your smoke alarms: Make sure they’re working before the celebrations begin.
- Know your escape plan: Everyone in your home should know what to do in an emergency.
- Keep exits clear: Don’t block doors or hallways with decorations or gifts.
Stay safe and enjoy the festive season
