Standing with our communities

Published date:

Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust (JRHT) believes that everyone living in a home managed by JRHT, and everyone who works for us, should feel safe, respected and that they belong.

Recently, flags have been put up, often overnight, on lamp posts in some communities by people we do not know. We understand this has affected people in different ways. Some people have found it unsettling, particularly because the flags are sometimes linked to far-right groups. Others see the flags as an expression of pride and identity. We are also aware of reports of racist incidents and graffiti in York recently, which we take very seriously.

Acting on our values

As a values-driven organisation, we will always challenge and oppose discrimination in all its forms. We continue to reflect on how we respond to issues like this and will seek further expert advice where needed. We will also be working closely with the Police, Local Authorities and community partners to help keep our communities safe and welcoming for everyone.

Supporting and listening

We know recent events have caused concern. Our colleagues and local teams are here to listen, offer reassurance and provide support. We’re also working with community partners and staff networks to understand what more we can do to help people feel safe and included.

If you have any concerns, need support, or want to share your views, please speak to a colleague from JRHT or get in touch with us directly

Building understanding and respect

People hold different views and express identity in different ways. We ask everyone to do so in a way that is inclusive and respectful. We want our communities to be places where everyone feels safe and proud to belong.

Our commitment

We remain deeply committed to our values: we show we care, we are built on trust, and we make a difference. We will continue to stand with residents, colleagues and communities to make sure everyone feels safe, supported and included.
