Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust (JRHT) has been awarded funding through the Government’s Warm Homes Initiative, helping to improve energy efficiency in homes, lower energy bills, and create warmer, more sustainable living environments for residents.

This funding is part of the £1.8 billion Warm Homes Plan, which will benefit up to 170,000 homes across England. The funding is allocated to local authorities and social housing providers to deliver vital home upgrades, including insulation, solar panels, and heat pumps - helping households save hundreds of pounds a year on energy costs.

Funding and Partnership

Through the Tees Valley Combined Authority, which has been awarded £43.9 million, JRHT will receive its share of funding to support energy performance improvements in homes. This initiative is a key step in reducing heating costs, improving energy efficiency, and cutting carbon emissions for JRHT residents.

“With rising energy bills impacting so many households, this funding will provide a lasting solution - helping to make homes warmer, more energy efficient, and more affordable to heat," said Sharon Brookes, Director of Asset Management, Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust.

"We are committed to creating sustainable, affordable homes, and this funding allows us to accelerate that mission while supporting our residents’ well-being.”

What this means for residents

The funding will directly support low-income households and social housing tenants, helping them to:

  • Reduce energy bills through improved insulation and clean heating solutions
  • Enjoy warmer, healthier homes with upgraded energy efficiency
  • Benefit from environmentally friendly improvements, such as solar panels and heat pumps

At JRHT, we believe that affordable and sustainable housing is essential. These home improvements will not only reduce carbon emissions but also help residents save money on their energy bills—improving long-term quality of life.

Next steps

The funding award is currently provisional until the grant agreement is signed by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. Once this is confirmed, we will share a full implementation timeline.

In the coming months, we will also provide further updates on:

  • What energy efficiency improvements will be made
  • When and where the work will take place
  • How residents can access these benefits

Residents will receive updates through direct communication, the JRHT website, newsletters, and community information sessions to ensure they are informed and supported throughout the process.
