Statement from Chris Simpson, Managing Director
Over the August Bank Holiday weekend, a large number of Union Jack and St George’s Cross flags were attached to lamp posts in New Earswick, particularly on Hawthorn Terrace and White Rose Avenue. These lamp posts are owned and maintained by the City of York Council (CYC), and the flags were installed without permission.
We recognise that the flying of flags can mean different things to different people. Some residents have told us that they feel unhappy or uncomfortable with the number of flags and the way they were put up, describing them as unsafe, intimidating, or overwhelming. Others have expressed support for flag flying as a way of celebrating culture and identity.
At JRHT, we respect everyone’s right to celebrate their culture and beliefs, but we believe this should always be done in a way that feels safe, open, and inclusive for all. We have shared residents’ feedback with CYC, who have also issued a statement about flags across the city. You can read their statement in the attachment and watch CYC’s video about safety concerns here:
At present, New Earswick is the only managed community where flags have been reported. If we become aware of displays in other areas, we will follow the guidance and response set out by the relevant local authority.
We understand that this situation may be worrying. If you experience or witness any behaviour which feels intimidating, please report it to the police first. You can also contact us if you feel concerned or would like support — we are here to listen and help.
We will continue to monitor the situation and work closely with CYC to ensure any concerns are addressed promptly and fairly.
