At Hartfields, a resident is stepping up to help other residents to get online and stay connected. Jeff is a resident who is making a real difference.

We spoke to him about why he got involved and the common tech questions he gets asked.

How did you start helping other residents with technology?

I first heard about Digital Inclusion at the Residents Assembly. Afterwards, I spoke with JRHT, who explained that many residents needed more support to get online.  I realised that some residents living at Hartfields could benefit from a little help and guidance, so I approached Charlotte Hope (General Manager at Hartfields) and offered my services. I then gave a presentation to the Residents Association, and it’s grown from there!

What kind of tech problems do residents ask about most?

Setting up mobile phones is probably the most common, followed by Smart TV’s. For example, I helped one resident who was having   problems with his Smart TV reception. Together, we spoke to his Broadband Supplier and managed to get him a cheaper, better deal.   A lot of residents are still on old packages that could easily be improved.

What’s it like helping other residents?

It is very satisfying to show other residents how much more they can do with their mobile devices.

The biggest challenge is not overwhelming residents with too much information at once. I try and keep it simple and focus on one thing at a time.

What’s your one bit of advice for residents who want to get online?

Don’t be afraid to ask – we are here to help. There is no such thing as a silly question when it comes to technology.
