Steve’s career began with Unilever as a Research & Applications Technologist in Surrey.

He relocated to York to take up a position with Smith and Nephew Group as a Senior Polymer Technologist working in orthopaedics and wound care product development.

This position offered Steve the opportunity to work in education which led to him becoming one of the first STEM Ambassadors appointed in the UK, promoting Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

He furthered this role for over 20 years, initially with North Yorkshire Business and Education Partnership (NYBEP) and latterly, as the Learning and Education Officer for Science, with Leeds City Council Museums and Galleries.

He has also worked in the development of anti-counterfeit systems for product verification and managed a mobile laboratory for the assessment of water quality, ensuring legal requirement compliance.

During his career he has worked on projects in collaboration with numerous organisations including, The Royal Society of Chemists, The Institute of Physics, The British Science Association, Yorkshire Forward, The Science Museum Group, The Natural History Museum, The Ernest Cook Trust and The Rotary Club.

Steve retired in August 2023 and now enjoys involvement with various community groups, particularly the New Earswick Disabled Swimming Club, Rowntree Lodge Gardening Club, The New Earswick Nature Reserve, and Local History Society. He also hosts a regular quiz at Rowntree Lodge.
