Residents in New Earswick voted for more fresh food and vegetables

Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust (JRHT) are delighted to welcome Rosie from Fodder and Forage into the vibrant community within New Earswick.

Rosie is a local resident and the proud owner of Fodder and Forage a community shop with a big difference. The shop sells a large selection of fruit and vegetables which can be brought individually if required. It also sells seasonal locally grown flowers from Thirsk and York. Rosie is planning to extend her product range and is planning to sell artisan bread, locally made apple juice, as well as loose dry stock including pasta, muesli, nuts and seeds.

In autumn, the communities’ team from Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust (JRHT) asked residents to provide suggestions of the shops they wanted to see in New Earswick. Over 80% of the community voted for fresh food and produce.  We listened to the community and embarked on a journey to find a business who would do just that.

Fodder and Forge opened its doors in December 2019 and is already proving to be very popular with the local community.

Fi Godfrey-Faussett, Community Development Manager, Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust said “We are always looking for ways to work with the local community. This is a great example of how local people can shape their communities and we warmly welcome Rosie and Fodder and Forage into the community of New Earswick.”

Rosie from Fodder and Forage said “I was delighted to work alongside JRHT to open Fodder and Forage. Personally, I am no stranger to living on a tight budget and I wanted to provide customers with the opportunity to buy affordable fresh fruit and vegetables. I have just introduced a selection of fruit, salad and vegetable boxes which can be delivered locally.”
