JRHT supports disabled residents with adapted homes

At JRHT we are committed to ensuring that all of residents can live in a safe and secure home that meet their needs. As part of this commitment, we offer practical support to disabled residents through our minor adaptation service.

Andy Wilson, JRHT’s Modernisation and Planned Maintenance Manager explains. “The minor adaptations service means that we can fund small adaptations up to the value of £1500. These include the installation of grab handles by entrance doors, baths or toilets, grab rails and second banister rails to stairs, installation of small ramps to entrance doors and installation of over bath showers.

“Where more complex adaptations are needed and the value of the work would exceed £1,500, JRHT supports residents to apply to their local authority for a Disabled Facilities Grant. The need for the adaptation is assessed by the local authority’s occupational therapist who makes recommendations for the work needed. The work is usually arranged by the local authority after JRHT has reviewed the proposals. Occasionally, we receive a grant payment from the local authority to carry out the work ourselves.

“Examples of major adaptations include converting a bathroom to a level access shower, creating a new downstairs bathroom or toilet, installing hoists, stairlifts and other specialised equipment.”

One recent example highlights the importance of working together to achieve positive outcomes. JRHT worked with the local council to provide home adaptations for a family with a son with significant physical disabilities and learning difficulties. The team completely transformed their home. The layout was completely redesigned, allowing easy wheelchair use, a wet floor bathroom adjacent to the son’s bedroom open plan family kitchen and living areas and ramped access to the external doors.

Andy said: “The transformation was a real team effort. We worked closely with the local authority to ensure that we would create a home that would meet the family’s needs – now and in the future. We engaged with family throughout, from the more major building work, right through to consulting with them on finishes for the kitchen units, décor and flooring. We hope the family can be happy in their home for many years to come.”
