JRHT grants keeping people connected in the community

Posted on15 Nov 2021

JRHT operates a small JRF-funded community grants scheme in York called the York Committee, which supports voluntary, community and other not-for-profit organisations to develop strong, empowered communities without poverty or isolation. Earlier this year a community grant was awarded to Foxwood Community Centre for developing their Community Hub and surplus food sessions. This has helped residents to feel connected and supported by their local community during the pandemic.

The initiative has proved to be very successful. When asked about how community members view the support from the Community Hub, one volunteer said: “Some are overwhelmingly grateful that people in the community are looking out for them and that they are not forgotten. For others they value the chance for a regular chat which reduces their sense of isolation.”

Helen Watson, Community Grants Support Officer at JRHT, said: “The York Committee was really pleased to support Foxwood Community Centre in developing its Community Hub. The centre is a very flexible and adaptive organisation and has a strong understanding of the needs of local residents. We’re delighted that the community grants scheme is making a real difference to people when they need a helping hand.”

Foxwood Community Hub is now running a ‘pay as you feel’ social lunch every Friday between 12noon and 2pm at the community centre. A JRHT representative attends this lunch each week and is available to chat if you have an issue or question you want to raise about your home or community. For more information about this, and other activities run by the Hub, please contact Kerry Briggs on 07727 041464 or at [email protected].

JRHT’s York Committee has opened the latest round of its community grant funding programme. The committee supports local #NeverMoreNeeded voluntary and community groups, like Foxwood Community Centre, who share our vision of solving poverty in the UK. Funding applications must be received by 2pm on Wednesday 1 December.
