The development will be located in JRHT’s garden village of New Earswick, York. Once complete, plans for the area will encompass the idea of a safe and welcoming social space. There will be facilities and garden areas that people of all ages can enjoy.
Modern and spacious, New Lodge will have 105 one and two bedroomed Extra Care suites. There will be 45 one bedroomed residential care suites.
Holding an emphasis on sustainability, New Lodge will feature two blocks of apartments designed to provide flexible accommodation. These can respond to residents care needs as they change over time.
Work is scheduled to start on site later this month. The project is due for completion in 2021. New Lodge will replace Red Lodge, an existing care facility. The work will also see the re-location of the multi-use games area (MUGA) by early spring.
Both JRHT and Wates will undertake a range of community initiatives throughout the project. This will include a series of training and employment opportunities for local people. It will also include engagement with schools, community groups, and employing the services of local businesses and social enterprises.
Jo Jamieson, Managing Director, Wates Residential North, commented:
“It’s an honour for us to work with the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust on this project. It will provide a much needed boost for extra care accommodation in New Earswick. We will create opportunities for local people to learn, train and work at this fantastic new development. This will ensure the project leaves a positive legacy in the local community long after its completion.”
Joel Owen, Deputy Director of Development and Asset Management at JRHT added:
“It’s important that JRHT continue to meet the needs of the local area. We will do this by providing decent affordable homes and high-quality care services, long into the future. We are excited to begin work with Wates Residential as we build New Lodge.
This is an exciting next chapter for the village. Work is already underway on the Folk Hall and the launch of the new tennis and sports courts. We will work closely with Wates and the community to ensure that this is successful and positive for the area.”
