Homestead Park wins "Best Park in Yorkshire 2019"

After months of hard work, the Parks and Landscapes Team from Joseph Rowntree Foundation and  Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust have won the prestigious ‘Yorkshire Rose Award for Best Park in Yorkshire, 2019’, Homestead Park also achieved a Platinum Award  and Best in Category for Parks, Gardens and Cemeteries.

Judges who visited Homestead Park in July said that this year’s summer bedding display on the theme of Wallace and Gromit had “a visually stunning impact and made both children and adults smile”. They were impressed with the hand cut topiary hedges, the Dementia friendly garden and the white border. They particularly commented on the wildlife friendly projects such as the meadow and the camera traps, as well as the community garden and the bird and bat boxes. They were also complimentary about the facilities available – including the extensive and well used children’s play area, the café service provided by York Explore, and the plant sales area with its eco credentials including the use of plant pots made from waste product from the rice industry.

Members of the team attended the awards ceremony on 10 September to collect these prestigious awards.

“It is a great tribute to Joseph Rowntree Foundation and Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust to be recognised by Yorkshire In Bloom as the Best Park in Yorkshire and to receive the other prestigious awards. I want to thank each member of the team and our volunteers who have worked extremely hard to make this happen.

It has been a successful year for the team, this year’s seasonal bedding display based on Wallace and Gromit – A Grand Day Out has been a huge success along with our community fun day which attracted over 2,500 visitors. “ Dan Booth,  Parks and Landscapes Manager, Joseph Rowntree Foundation and Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust
