Homestead Park becomes Jurassic Park

A new summer bedding display at JRF-owned Homestead Park in York is now complete and well worth a visit! The dinosaur-themed display features willow sculptures of triceratops, velociraptor and T-Rex, alongside a colourful display of different varieties of bedding plants.

The sculptures were beautifully crafted by local artist Leilah Vyner of Dragon Willow who has worked with JRF-JRHT for several years on our displays. Previous displays have included our Wallace and Gromit theme, Winnie the Pooh, Save the bees, and last year’s displays of Alice in Wonderland and The Christmas Carol.

Paul Sarginson, JRHT Senior Gardener said: “We decided this year to move away from themes such as Alice in Wonderland, so we chose dinosaurs because we know that children love them. We received some advice from Leilah at Dragon Willow, and she said that she had made dinosaurs before for other gardens and they were popular with visitors. The dinosaurs have been a big hit with the public and we have had loads of positive comments.”

The Blueberry Academy, which supports people who have an aspiration to work and need some practical support to develop their employment skills and work experience, grew the 5,000 plants that make up the bedding displays.

Paul continued: “I would like to thank the Blueberry Academy for all the amazing 5,000 plants they have grown for us this year. It is the first year they have produced all the plants for us in the greenhouses at the Homestead using peat free compost and recyclable plant trays and the quality of the plants have been exceptional.”

Homestead Park is a beautiful 14-acre garden, located 1.5 miles from York city centre in Clifton. The park has a children’s play area, café, plant shop and ample picnic space. Check here for up-to-date opening times.

To visit the dinosaurs, head to the formal bedding area which can be found near the entrance to the children’s play area, next to the café and plant shop.
