Folk Hall prepares for re-opening weekend celebrations

The Folk Hall is at the centre of village life in New Earswick and part of York's heritage. After a major refurbishment, it will officially re-open on Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 September, and everyone is welcome to come along and celebrate.

Our Folk Hall in New Earswick re-opens on the weekend of Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 September after a major refurbishment. The weekend will be the start of the next chapter in its remarkable story, and we want everyone to help us celebrate. We hope that as many people as possible will come along with their friends and families.

There will be free refreshments and activities for the whole family.

At 12pm on the Saturday, the Lord Mayor of York Councillor Keith Orrell will join the Chief Executive of the JRHT Campbell Robb to officially re-open the Folk Hall. Fiona Williams, the CEO of Explore Libraries and Archives, will also speak at the opening.

Other highlights will include a community lunch, a climbing wall, interactive art, community performances on the Saturday, and a bake-off and a free showing of a Disney film on the Sunday.

On the Sunday evening, there will be a performance by Europe’s number one swing band, the Swing Commanders. You can get free tickets for their show from the Folk Hall.

It promises to be a fantastic weekend so please come along. With the exception of the Sunday night concert, all the activities will be from 11am to 4pm.

Our vision is for a new, improved Folk Hall at the heart of the community: just as Joseph Rowntree intended. Today’s Folk Hall includes a Post Office, a fantastic community café, and the New Earswick Explore Library: a partnership between ourselves and Explore York Libraries and Archives.
