Jonathan Gibson, Head of Development said: “We are extremely pleased to win this award as it acknowledges all the hard work and effort of colleagues at JRHT, our residents and design team put in over the last 12 years to deliver such a high-quality scheme we can all be immensely proud of.”

Clare Cameron, Director from PRP said: “It was a pleasure for PRP to design a new care home and extra care housing at the heart of such a special village. To see the residents happy and enjoying the intergenerational activity from being so close to all the central amenities is an absolute delight.”

Before deciding on the winners, the panel of judges visited the shortlisted entries which included New Lodge.

One of the judges said: “The most memorable aspect of visiting New Lodge as part of Housing Design Awards judging panel was meeting the delighted residents. I heard so many stories about how this scheme had transformed their lives, and opened up opportunities to enjoy, engage and celebrate this next chapter in their lives.

And you can’t help but meet the residents as the scheme connects and reinvigorates existing village amenities, cafe, library, restaurant, swimming pool is what great architecture combined with an enlightened client can achieve.”

New Lodge has also been short listed for the Neave Brown Award which is awarded by the Royal Institute of British Architects.  The ceremony takes place this month.

The award is named in honour of the modernist architect Neave Brown (1929 – 2018), the award recognises the best new examples of affordable housing in the UK.

On this year's shortlist RIBA President Simon Allford said:

“At a time when the cost of living is among the most pressing issues of the day, these examples of affordable housing outline possibilities for a better future. We need more homes, that are better designed in terms of amenity, carbon, context, community and culture – we must focus on them all. “

Notes

What are HAPPI design principles?

In 2009, the government undertook a report looking at the future shape of our housing for older people (Housing our Ageing Population: Panel for Innovation). As recognised thought leaders within this sector, PRP were represented on the expert panel. The final report called for a national effort to build new and better quality homes for older people and concluded with 10 recommendations.
