The Lotherington Quarter

The Lotherington Quarter is located off Temple Avenue and takes its name from Elizabeth Lotherington (1764-1835) who married John Rowntree (1757-1827) in 1785. They had three sons and four daughters, one of them was Joseph Rowntree Senior, who set up a grocery business in Pavement in York in 1822. Joseph Rowntree Senior is the father of Joseph Rowntree, the well know philanthropist and owner of the cocoa works.

The Lotherington Quarter is a mix of 120 full sale, shared ownership and rented properties. There will be 16 shared ownership and 28 rented properties on this Quarter. Built in partnership by the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust and David Wilson Homes, each home has been designed with eco-friendly features including communal heating from a central biomass boiler and a drainage system that prevents flooding.

The Seebohm Quarter

The Seebohm Quarter is located off Fifth Avenue and takes its name from Benjamin Seebohn (1871-1954), second of the four sons of Joseph Rowntree and Emma Antoinette Rowntree. At the age of 18 he entered the family cocoa and chocolate business, with which he was associated until retirement in 1941.

The Seebohm Quarter is a mix of 229 full sale, shared ownership and rented properties. There will be 25 shared ownership and 37 rented houses along with 9 shared ownership and 31 rented flats on this Quarter.
