The Registered Managers Award (RMA) has been developed by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and was launched in 2002 to provide a sound learning platform for both new and experienced care managers. The RMA is based on two principles:

1) Acquisition of critical enabling knowledge
2) Application of this knowledge to practice

Its flexible focus means that it can be studied in open-learning format and used across a range of settings including small group homes, residential and nursing care and domiciliary care.

Who is it for?

The RMA is aimed at those people who currently manage or are hoping to manage a care facility in the statutory, voluntary or private care sectors.

Benefits to students

  • develop high quality managerial skills
  • achieve a comprehensive understanding of the theory and practice of the UK's mixed economy of care in care settings for vulnerable people
  • learn to use real work activities to generate evidence
  • gain the necessary skills and knowledge base to be able to meet the demands of the Care Standards Act

Employers also benefit, as employees who achieve this professional qualification are able to demonstrate an organisation's commitment to a high quality, professional approach to the care of individuals, and the requirements of the care standards Act 2000.

The course

The RMA has been developed to give managers and potential managers the knowledge and skills necessary to meet the standards of the Registered Managers Award. It consists of seven modules, which are delivered over an 8- 12 month period by supported open learning, accompanied by tutorials, group support and a mentoring scheme. The tutorials and group sessions will be arranged approximately every six weeks.

The modules are:

  • Diversity and equality - explores a person certified approach to care.
  • Social aspects of caring in a mixed economy of care - looks at social policy from a historical context to understand current care provision and a collaborative approach to care.
  • Caring at home - planning for care for people living in either a residential or nursing home setting or in the community.
  • Finance for managers of care - consider managing budgets and expenditure.
  • Quality assurance in care settings - setting up, managing and evaluating quality assurance systems.
  • Team management - your style of leadership and management of teams
  • Information and meetings in care settings - provides for good information and management of meetings of all kinds.

The RMA is certificated by Edexcel. Students may choose to gain credits towards a Diploma in Higher Education awarded by the University of Sunderland. In addition this qualification can also provide a route to the NVQ 4 in Care.

Presently the course is offered in York, Leeds and Scarborough, with further venues planned.
