Artist impression of Plaxton Court
Plaxton Court is a brand new housing development for the over
55's in Scarborough, which opened on 6 May 2008. It is based on the
innovative 'extra care' model and is aimed at enabling older people
to remain independent, even if they need high levels of
support.
Where is it?
Plaxton Court is located off Woodlands
Drive in the Woodlands Vale area, which is a suburb close to
Scarborough town centre. It overlooks beautiful countryside, with
some views out to the Scarborough coastline.
What is extra care?
Extra care housing developments
are aimed at older people who wish to live in their own
self-contained accommodation, with the availability of care and
support when needed. Extra care enables people to receive, in their
own home, the highest level of care that might previously have only
been available in a care home. The aim is to facilitate
independence and choice within a socially supportive
environment.
What type of properties are available?
There are 16
three-bedroom cottages and 53 one and two-bedroom self-contained
apartments. Flexible financial options mean that these are
available to purchase, part-own (shared ownership) or rent.
All accommodation is built to a recognised standard called
'Lifetime Homes'. This means that specific features have been
incorporated into the design, to assist people to maintain
independence and includes wheelchair accessibility.
Are there any social amenities
Opportunities to
participate in social and leisure activities are recognised to be
important aspects of general wellbeing. At Plaxton Court there is
an impressive range of communal facilities for residents, and
visitors to enjoy, including:
- Restaurant with lounge area
- Coffee bar
- Healthy living suite
- Convenience store
- Art / crafts room
- Library / IT room
- Hair salon
- Professionally landscaped gardens
- Laundry facilities
- Two people carriers
Although there ar extensive opportunities to mix socially,
personal choice means that residents can enjoy the lifestyle they
choose at a pace they are comfortable with.
Health and wellbeing
Our aim is to support older people
to live independently in their own home, through services that
promote good health and social wellbeing, as well as enabling you
to feel safe and secure. This includes advice on diet and exercise,
emotional support and counselling. In addition each property is
fitted with a call system, which can be used in an emergency to
summon immediate assistance.
Domiciliary support, such as home help and personal care is
available to those people who need it, 24 hours a day, 7 days a
week.
Partnership working
Plaxton Court is named in memory
of the late F W (Eric) Plaxton, former Chairman of the
Scarborough-based Plaxton Group. The F W Plaxton Charitable Trust
has made a large donation to help build Plaxton Court, without
which the scheme would not have been possible.
Are there any vacancies?
The scheme is very popular,
but there are still a few properties left. In addition, a waiting
list is in operation. Details of both are available on
request.
Can I visit?
Yes, visitors are very welcome. It might be advisable to telephone
beforehand, so that we can ensure that a members of staff is
available to give you a tour and answer any questions you might
have.
